MN DVS to speed license program

By Doug Barrett Jul 13, 2023 | 8:19 AM

Getting a Minnesota driver’s license is about to become a little easier. Starting August 1st the state is dropping the requirement that out-of-state drivers take a written knowledge test.

DVS Director Pong Xiong says if eligible drivers are already licensed in another state; they’ve proven they can drive safely.

The legislative change – which had bipartisan support – is designed to increase the efficiency at licensing agent offices across the state.

DVS says it takes less than a month to get a new license. Same day service is available two office locations: Dakota County License Center in Lakeville and the Clay County Department of Motor Vehicles in Moorhead.

Here’s what you’ll need for a standard driver’s license:
Two documents that include your full name and birth date, such as a passport, military ID or marriage certificate….
Out-of-state driver’s license or certified driving record….
If you are eligible for a Social Security number, you must provide the number….
The $38 fee for a class D license.
