North Dakota’s Insurance Commissioner says his office has seen an uptick in insurance fraud cases.
Jon Godfread says whenever the economy dips a bit, fraud spikes upward. He says it’s kept his fraud unit busy. The team consists of three fraud investigators, and one investigator focused on insurance agents.
Godfread says insurance fraud is not a victimless crime. “We pay higher premiums because the more fraud there is the more we have to pay as the insurance buying public.”
Godfread says he has a number of memorandums of understanding with local states’ attorneys to help them prosecute those crimes.
