GF / EGF to spray for skeeters

By Doug Barrett Jul 10, 2023 | 9:23 AM

An uptick in mosquito numbers will prompt local health officials to spray for the summer pests tonight in Grand Forks and East Grand Forks.

West Nile virus has been identified in the Grand Forks region. The cities of Grand Forks and East Grand Forks urge citizens to take extra precautions to avoid being bitten by the bugs.

Last year the two cities launched four ground attacks. There were 22 in 2016.

The spray trucks will roll between 8:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m.

To help reduce your risk of getting West Nile virus, the Health Department recommends the following protective measures:

  • Use insect repellent that contains DEET.
  • Limit outdoor activities between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts when possible.
  • Eliminate standing water around homes (e.g., buckets, flowerpots, old tires, wading pools and birdbaths).
