GF witnesses Air Force flyover

By Doug Barrett Jun 27, 2023 | 6:24 PM

As part of a celebration to mark 100 years of air refueling the U.S. Air Force conducted a flyover in the skies above Grand Forks this afternoon.  The event featured KC-135 Stratotankers and two B-52 Stratofortress aircraft.

In 1960 the Stratotanker mission began at the GFAFB.  A B-52 mission remained active until 1986 when the local base welcomed the B-1B Lancer.  In 1993 Grand Forks became the first super tanker wing.  The mission was eventually deactivated in 2010 with the arrival of the Global Hawk mission.

Air refueling remains a vital part of the U.S. Air Force capabilities but it is conducted on a global stage.  Tankers also carry cargo…passengers…aeromedical evacuations and perform strategic deterrence.
