UND to block TikTok before NDUS ban takes effect

UND has informed faculty, staff and students that, as of tomorrow (Tuesday), all traffic to the social media platform TikTok via the University’s network will be blocked, and the TikTok app will be removed from UND-owned devices.

That’s 11 days before the State Board of Higher Education’s ban on TikTok is to take effect.

In late March, the Higher Ed Board voted – for reasons of national security — to  block TikTok from all State University System devices and networks effective July 1st .

UND spokesman David Dodds said the University had intended to block TikTok early, in coordination with NDUS officials.

And that’s for good reason — to work out any bugs that might come up or any other problems, sol that we have all our ducks in a row and everything is good to go by that July 1st deadline,” Dodds said.

Dodds said that students were notified a few days ago, while faculty and staff were notified today (Mon) by UND’s Chief Information Officer, Madhavi Marasinghe.

The message noted that people may continue accessing TikTok on their personal devices, as long as it is not accessed through the UND network.

Dodds says he did not know if any other NDUS schools were going to enforce the ban before July 1.
