The East Grand Forks School Board has named an interim superintendent. The board has agreed to hire former Greenway School Superintendent Bryan Hackbarth.
Current Superintendent Mike Kolness is leaving to head up the Kindred (ND) school system.
The district suspended the search for a permanent superintendent in May after only receiving two applicants. The search will resume again come fall – and Hackbarth is a potential candidate.
The contract approved by the board last night (Monday) calls for Hackbarth to be paid $145,000 dollars. He will start his new duties officially July 1st.

The East Grand Forks School Board has voted to adopt state policy in recognizing Juneteenth as an official holiday. The move follows Minnesota legislative action to make it a holiday starting this year. Board Chair Brandon Boespflug says no school business will be conducted that day and all staff scheduled to work will be paid. He says moving forward the compensation issue will be negotiated into future contracts. Boespflug says he doesn’t oppose the holiday but the state mandate in the middle of a budget year. The motion to approve Juneteenth was unanimous.

In other news the district finished the year with an enrollment of 1,814. That’s 44 students less than one year ago. It was also the lowest tally since the 2014-15 school year.
