Law enforcement from throughout the region gathered at the Northern Valley Law Enforcement Memorial in south Grand Forks this afternoon to honor those who have died in the line of duty.
It marked the first time that the 11th annual event has been held in Optimist Park. The Northern Valley Law Enforcement Memorial has been six years in the making at a cost of some $390,000. It features a granite wall…a statue of a fallen officer…flags…benches…and pavers.
Local and state law enforcement officers from North Dakota and Minnesota joined federal law enforcement…US Air Force and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for the event. The ceremony included the reading of the roll call for fallen officers…bagpipes…flag folding…and a 21 gun salute
A total of 224 officers were killed in the line of duty nationwide in 2022. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation designating May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which it falls as Police Week.
