Newly released 2022 data from the Minnesota Department of Health shows rising levels of syphilis in the state.
There were 1,832 cases of syphilis in 2022 – a 25% increase. The data suggests new cases were mostly among males. However, the presence of syphilis among females who can become pregnant continues to be of concern.
Health officials admit that the COVID-19 pandemic may have had impacts on STD data that make direct year-over-year comparisons difficult.
STDs remained at near historic high levels in Minnesota with 32,072 STD cases reported last year. Chlamydia remained the number one reported STD with 22,079 positive hits – a 2% decrease. Gonorrhea remained the second most reported STD in Minnesota with 8,161 cases – down 15%.
