GF council to review citizen comments

By Doug Barrett Apr 25, 2023 | 9:28 AM

Citizen comments were the topic of talk at last night’s (Monday) Grand Forks City Council meeting.

Council member Bret Weber brought up the issue in response to recent remarks made by some residents regarding the failed Fufeng project.

Council President Dana Sande says he’s not in favor of eliminating the public comment portion of the meetings – but there needs to be some standard as to what is…and is not…acceptable.  “There has to be a little decorum for all of us.’

It was back in August that the council revamped the public comment criteria. Council member Rebecca Osowski expressed concerns about making too many changes.  “It doesn’t make us look great every time we run into an instance we go to try and change things up.”

Suggestions that were discussed range from moving comments to the Committee of the Whole meeting….limiting comments to agenda specific items…allowing remarks by citizens only….and curbing disruptive behavior.

The issue will be further discussed at a future meeting.
