Trial begins for key defendant in large ND fentanyl case

By Pat Sweeney Apr 11, 2023 | 5:21 PM

A federal court jury in Fargo is hearing testimony in one of the largest fentanyl distribution cases ever tried in North Dakota.

Marie Um, also known as “Angry Bird,” was indicted in 2017 for drug sale and international money laundering-conspiracy.

Um was one of three Canadian nationals extradited from Quebec as part of an investigation known as “Operation Denial,” which began in January 2015 with the overdose death of 18-year-old Bailey Henke in Grand forks.

Prosecutors say the drug ring was responsible for 15 overdoses in North Dakota, Oregon, New Jersey, North Carolina and Rhode Island, including four deaths.

Um’s trial is expected to last one month with 67 witnesses scheduled to testify.
