The question of legal sports betting in North Dakota will not be put to voters, after the state Senate today (Mon) defeated House Concurrent Resolution 3002.
The resolution would have given the legislature the power to amend the Constitution to authorize and regulate sports betting, but only on professional sports.
Republican Sen. Scott Meyer of Grand Forks voted for the measure, saying sports betting is already happening — and the state is losing tax revenue.
“Tens of thousands of North Dakotans are already particpating, wagering millions of dollars each year, and a no vote … will not stop the money from leaving our state, and it won’t provide any protection to our state citizens who choose to participate,” he said.
Republican Sen. David Rust of Tioga opposed the resolution.
“When we put something on the ballot, it shows something of an endorsement of that,” he said. “And I, for one, don’t want to be held accountable for endorsing this particular issue.”
The Senate rejected the resolution 30-to-16.
The House approved the resolution by five votes in January.
