MN’s moose population count declines

By Doug Barrett Apr 7, 2023 | 8:27 AM

Despite another decline in Minnesota’s moose population the DNR says the overall numbers appear to have stabilized.

An aerial survey put the number of moose in the state at 3,290. That’s down from the 2022 estimate of 4,700. Factors such as visibility of moose from the air, challenging weather conditions and moose avoidance of aircraft create moderately high sampling uncertainty.

In 2009 the population estimate was around 8,000. According to biologists the annual changes since 2013 appear to be relatively small on average and random – some years showing a population increase and others a decrease.

While estimates suggest continued stability in the population and reproductive success, DNR researchers point out that Minnesota moose remain at risk given long-term trends
