The East Grand Forks council has selected City Clerk Megan Nelson to serve as the interim city administrator with the pending departure of David Murphy.

Three internal candidates applied for the interim position: Megan Nelson… Park and Rec Director Reid Huttunen…and Finance Director Karla Anderson.

Prior to the appointment City Attorney Ron Galstad informed the council that while it may not be illegal        city administrators typically aren’t allowed to be in unions. Both Huttunen and Anderson are in a department head union.

Mayor Steve Gander says not being appointed to the interim role should not dissuade anyone for applying for the permanent position.  “There are some really cool things that happen if you promote from within if it can happen.  We are not afraid to go outside and bring in an experienced one – but we are also receptive to an internal hire.  Please don’t think this excludes anyone from  from holding that permanent position.”

The council has selected the search firm David Drone Associates at a cost of $23,000 dollars to compile a list of potential candidates.

Murphy is leaving for a similar role in St. Joseph (MN). His last day on the job is April 21st.
