A one mill statewide property tax for UND’s medical school could soon be a thing of the past.
The North Dakota House has approved a resolution that would eliminate the tax – with voter approval in 2024. The tax generates roughly $11 million dollars each biennium.
Supporters of the resolution says it’s not a shot against the med school – but rather highlights the need to find another pot of money within the general fund.
Representative Jon Nelson says the mill levy is a funding source the school can count on – and is an investment in health care throughout the state. “It’s going to be easy to say let’s control our property tax and this one mill…which is something around $5 per person. It’s a lottery ticket we give the med school for quality healthcare.”
The resolution was approved on a 53-34 vote. The amended bill goes back to the Senate for final approval.
