The so-called “pronoun” bill has passed both houses of the legislature, and is headed to Gov. Burgum’s desk.
The bill says public school teachers cannot be required to use a student’s preferred pronoun, if it doesn’t match their sex at birth – unless the parents say it’s okay.
During House floor debate on SB 2231, Republican Representative Lori Van Winkle said this is a “back to basics” bill.
House Minority Leader Josh Boschee of Fargo spoke against the measure, saying using students’ preferred pronouns is a matter of respect for them.
The bill passed the House 60 to 32.
Governor Burgum has not indicated publicly if he supports the measure.
