Fufeng termination notice on pause

By Doug Barrett Mar 21, 2023 | 7:48 AM

Although it was not an actual agenda item a familiar topic generated attention at last night’s Grand Forks council meeting – Fufeng.

During council comments at the end of the meeting member Ken Vien questioned last week’s decision to enter into a “standstill” agreement with the failed corn milling plant. Vien says reflecting on the action he’s disappointed the decision put on hold the actual termination.  “When we did the motion to terminate I thought we kind of told the world and everybody that we terminated the agreement.”

City Attorney Dan Gaustad says he was in the process of drafting the termination notice when Fufeng’s attorneys requested more discussion time – which he presented to the city council.  “I think it’s an opportunity to have these discussions with Fufeng to see if a resolution can be reached.  Everything is on the table.”

The standstill agreement has a 90 day window to complete negotiations.

The council cancelled the project when the U.S. Air Force raised security concerns with locating the China-based company in close proximity to the GFAFB.
