Crime was up in Grand Forks in 2022. The Grand Forks Police Department has released its 2022 data suggesting there were 54,397 calls for service – a 1.2% increase. At the same time the eight main criminal offenses jumped over 17%.

A closer look at the numbers showed an increase in robbery… burglary… larceny…and arson. There were slight declines in rape… aggravated assault…and auto thefts. There were also two murders in 2022 compared to one in 2021 and three in 2020.

On a positive note the number of overdose calls declined significantly. There were 38 O-D’s last year resulting five deaths. In 2021 the figure topped 70 calls for service resulting in 11 fatalities.  Despite being cut by more than half police say the opioid crisis continues to be a significant problem that negatively impacts all types of individuals.

On another front the GFPD also issued fewer traffic citations last year. The 7,185 tickets handed out was down 16% from 2021. According to police this is due in part to a decrease in staffing levels as well the implementation of new software used to track citations issued.
