Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison has launched a civil investigation into Kia and Hyundai’s sale of vehicles lacking industry-standard, anti-theft technology to state consumers.
The A-G’s Office wants Kia and Hyundai to produce documents and answer questions under oath.
The investigation aims to gather info to determine whether the carmakers violated state consumer protection and public nuisance laws.
The move comes one day after a bill was sent to the Minnesota House floor… requiring those carmakers to install anti-theft protection devices in vehicles that don’t have them.
A video on TikTok shows how to break into and steal those vehicles, using a U-S-B cord to bypass the ignition system.
The bill’s sponsor, DFL Rep. Brad Tabke, says in 2022, more than 3,300 of those vehicles were stolen in the Twin Cities metro area alone.
