DU hockey boards could find home in EGF

After going without an outdoor ice rink this winter the East Grand Forks Park and Recreation Department is unveiling an ambitious plan for an outdoor facility for the 2023-24 skating season.

Park officials are working with the Blue Line Club on a project utilizing donated dasher boards and glass from Magness Arena and the University of Denver hockey program.

In a staff report to the city council the Blue Line Club has proposed hiring a local trucking company to pick up the boards at the end of the hockey season to bring them back to East Grand Forks. The estimated cost of the donation is upwards of $50,000 dollars.

Earth work and site improvements would be needed to create a level surface near the Blue Line Arena. In addition improvements would be required to the VFW Arena to allow a Zamboni to support the outdoor rink.

A total project budget is still a work in progress. Donated labor would support hard costs.

The council will review the plan at a work session on Tuesday (5:30 p.m.).
