ND lawmakers tackle gender in sports

By Doug Barrett Feb 16, 2023 | 8:38 AM

A bill to require higher education institutions to designate their sports and athletic teams as male, female, or coed based on biological sex passed in the ND House of Representatives. The bill would prevent trans identifying students from competing on their chosen teams.

Critics expressed concern that this legislation would affect membership in national athletics organizations.

The bill’s sponsor, Representative Ben Koppelman, doesn’t think North Dakota will have problems at the national level.

The bill passed in the house with a 75 to 18 vote.
