The East Grand Forks Police Department has installed a new interactive video training system designed to give law enforcement another tool to help de-escalate tense situations.
The VirTra system was purchased using a $50,000 dollar federal COPS grant. It helps teach officers to make critical decisions during intenseā¦uncertainā¦and rapidly evolving situations often dealing with people with mental health issues.
The system also uses special adapters that allow officers to use their regular police weapons during the exercise. Currently six members of the P-D are undergoing training to serve as program instructors.
The grant money is designed to support creative practices to prevent crime and promote safe communities.
