The East Grand Forks Police Department has requested council support in creating a new position with the goal of landing new officers on the force.
The department has been plagued with staffing shortages for the past two years – and recruiting qualified candidates has been a struggle.
Under the plan the city would recruit law enforcement students nearing completion of their training. They would be paid during the final stage of education with a conditional offer of employment.
Police Chief Mike Hedlund says the number of recruits would be linked to the number of open positions within the department. “Essentially we are trying to get our hands on those folks before they commit to other agencies.”
Hedlund says language could also be written into the contract to protect the city financially. “Try to draft some type of agreement if they either fail or washout they would pay back the amount paid during the educational period.”
During last night’s (Tuesday) work session the council seemed generally receptive to the idea. More information will be provided at a future meeting.
