MN BCA sees rise in sextortion

By Doug Barrett Feb 8, 2023 | 9:14 AM

The Department of Public Safety is urging Minnesota parents to talk to their children and teens about a growing crime – sextortion.

Authorities say there has been a surge in cases this past year where primarily young boys are lured by someone pretending to be a young girl requesting explicit photos.  After receiving the nude pics the extortionist attempts to blackmail the sender threatening the put the photos on social media for his friends to see.

Minnesota BCA Superintendent Drew Evans says the criminals prey on fear and shame.

Evans says in most cases the calls originate from Nigeria and the Ivory Coast.
