Another development project is eyeing the eastern edge of the University of North Dakota campus.
The goal is to transform the aging parking lot off University Avenue into two five-story apartment buildings and space for a collegiate softball diamond. The so-called Memorial Village II is estimated at around $54 million dollars. The two buildings would add 189 apartment units on site.
UND V-P for Facilities Mike Pieper says putting the ballpark near the Pollard Center has been in the long-range master plan for some time. He says the close proximity to offices and locker rooms would make for an easy transition for coaches and players.
Pieper says an analysis is currently underway to address parking with the loss of the surface lot.
The public-private partnership is seeking a tax exemption from the city to help move construction forward. The Grand Forks council has agreed to allow the developer to file a pre-application that triggers a third party review of the request.
