ND committee reviewing Blue Logo bill

By Doug Barrett Jan 31, 2023 | 9:08 AM

North Dakota lawmakers are getting another crack this session at the so-called Blue Logo bill.

The highway signs display information about gas…food…and lodging with logos of various businesses who pay a fee for the advertisement.

Supporters say it’s another tool to attract more visitors to visit a North Dakota business. State Tourism Director Sarah Otte Coleman says around 21.7 million people visited the state in 2021.  “You have to wonder how many more gallons of fuel…or meals…or room nights you could have sold if you could lure people off the highway.”

Kari Newman Ness of Newman Signs expressed concerns with the state getting into the advertising business.

During testimony before the House Transportation Committee it was noted that North Dakota is one of only three states that does not offer the signage.

The Committee has asked for some additional information before making a recommendation on House Bill 1394.
