The East Grand Forks council appears reluctant to allowing chickens in city limits.
The issue surfaced at last night’s work session at the request of a resident looking to change the city’s zoning laws. The homeowner cited the high cost of eggs…good source of protein….and the fact they help reduce pest populations (mosquitoes) in a letter to the city.
Council member Clarence Vetter brought the idea up for discussion. “I guess I am not totally against it if we have limits…how many they can have….no roosters.”
Council member Dale Helms says he’s not a fan. “Chickens today and probably pigs tomorrow. I just think before we know it we’ll have a little farm in town here.”
City Attorney Ron Galstad says East Grand Forks doesn’t have the staff to oversee the program. The issue could pop up again at a future meeting as the mayor and three members were absent to attend legislative briefings in St. Paul.
