A North Dakota Senate committee took testimony today (Thursday) on a couple of bills designed to crack down on lead-footed motorists.
One idea is to raise speeding fines. Republican Senator Dean Rummel says his bill only apples to drivers who are 21 miles per hour or more over the posted limit.
Another bill would increase the fine for repeat offenders by $100 dollars. North Dakota Highway Patrol Trooper Jacob Jones says according to one insurance study North Dakota has the highest number of repeat driving offenses in the U.S. “In my experience on the road over the last 11 years I’ve seen some drivers who have in excess of 90 points on their driving record. They don’t care if they are suspended…they still drive. Possibly by adding another $100 it may deter them.”
No one spoke in opposition to either bill. The Senate Transportation Committee will vote on the measures at a later date.
