GF Co. Commission mulls adding county administrator role

Should Grand Forks County have a county administrator? That question came up at Tuesday’s commission meeting. Board chair Bob Rost noted that several North Dakota counties have one.

One commissioner said, if the County goes that route, applications should be taken. But Tom Ford – who’s been the County’s director of administration for about six years – said such talk makes him concerned.

I feel quite alarmed when I hear, ‘Well, we’ll just open it up and let anyone come in and apply,’” Ford said. “Anything can happen, but I have been filling that role for some time now.”

Ford said if someone else gets the job, “you don’t need me.”

Rost said Ford would be his choice for the job.

Mr. Ford has done a job that is way above what his job description says. I would never, ever be in favor of opening up that job,” Rost said. “It would be a promotion for him.”

The Board’s administrative service committee will further discuss the idea at a meeting later this month.
