The North Dakota House has passed a bill that requires local units of government to disclose in terms of dollars how much taxes will go up during budget talks – and not in mills.

Representative Pat Heinert says the intent is simplify the discussion for the general public and to add more transparency to the budget process.  “I heard at a recent budget hearing process – and every meeting – I never heard a dollar amount from the finance people.  The only thing I heard was we are not raising mills.  However…they never talked about valuations.”

The House approved the bill Tuesday on a vote of 92-0.
