With the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States claiming no jurisdiction over the proposed Fufeng project in Grand Forks what’s the next step for the corn milling plant?
The CFIUS review was requested over security concerns…the company’s ties to China…and its close proximity to the Grand Forks Air Force Base.
Grand Forks Mayor Brandon Bochenski says the important thing is that the review agencies opted not to try and stop the project. Bochenski says the next step is to bring the report back to the city council for discussion. “At least have the conversation how they want to move forward.”
Bochenski says the city still needs to do its due diligence before construction begins. “There’s more hurdles to clear that are spelled out in the development agreement. Many of those are environmental at this point.”
North Dakota’s two U.S. Senators were among those who had voiced security concerns. Senator Kevin Cramer tells KNOX NEWS that in light of the CFIUS decision he will be asking for intel directly from relevant agencies. “My concerns remain the same with the Chinese Communist Party investing in agriculture in North Dakota. I look forward to the classified briefing scheduled for next week to learn more.”
