NPN still has plans for GF fertilizer plant

By Doug Barrett Dec 13, 2022 | 9:16 AM

The Grand Forks council is one vote away from granting another six-month extension for Northern Plains Nitrogen.

The proposed $3 billion dollar nitrogen fertilizer plant has been eyeing a site near the city’s sewage lagoons since it was first announced in 2013.

NPN’s Larry Mackie says they remain cautiously optimistic about the project and continue to work on lining up investors. Mackie says the region faces some of the highest fertilizer costs and the plant will utilize the latest technology to capture C-O-2 emissions.  In addition green energy and grey water will be used in the process.

The city council gave preliminary approval to the extension last night (Monday).

The latest agreement would run through June 30, 2023.
