Grand Forks is ready to pour $139,000 dollars down the drain with the goal of saving money.
The city council gave preliminary approval this week to the so-called FOG abatement program. FOG stands for fats…oil…and grease.
The accumulation of FOG in pipes and manholes has been an ongoing problem that requires staff to manually flush targeted lift stations and manholes on a regular basis to keep things flowing smoothly.
The proposed contract with Solutions Group, LLC involves the daily dumping of bacteria and microorganisms into pre-determined locations to help degrade organic substances and sludge.
Water Works Director Melanie Parvey says a pilot FOG program this year has shown success. Parvey says they will monitor conditions in 2023 to determine the actual cost savings.
