Update: 3:45 PM
The Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office says an estimated 200 anglers have been rescued after being trapped on a large ice chunk that broke free on Minnesota’s Upper Red Lake.
The Sheriff’s office reported at about 2:35 PM this (Mon) afternoon that anyone who needed to be evacuated has been accounted for.
The S-O received a 9-1-1 call at about 11:35 this morning.
Deputies and first responders arrived to find a large portion of ice in about 30 yards of open water. Several water rescue agencies and vehicles responded.
A narrow spot of the separation was found and a temporary bridge was deployed to rescue the anglers at the southeast portion of the lake.
At about 1:00 PM, a spokesman for Northwoods Fish Houses LLC said in a video that a “big crack” opened up from east to west … from the Red Lake reservation line to Rogers’ resort on the south shore.
On Sunday, Rogers’ resort said the ice on the lake was seven inches thick…and urged anglers to be vigilant.
