Electric scooters have been operating in Grand Forks since September…and they could be coming to East Grand Forks.
The E-G-F city council heard a presentation Tuesday night from Bird Rides, the company behind the scooters in Grand Forks.
Bird Rides has approached East Grand Forks about a service agreement to allow the use of stand-up scooters for those 18 and older.
East Grand Forks Mayor Steve Gander says he has personally seen scooter programs go over big in Idaho.
“I actually had the feeling while I was there – it’s almost become a case where if you’re going to be a summertime recreational area, you need to have these,” Gander said. “That’s how cool they are. That’s how people are just loving riding these things.”
Council member Marc Demers is also receptive to the idea.
“I could see that being a huge draw, not only for people coming to visit us, but for our restaurants and businesses throughout downtown,” Demers said. “Quick, easy access, fun access, would be — could be — a big thing.”
No action was taken, but discussions on a memorandum of understanding and a possible ordinance will continue.
