Minnesota Democratic Gov. Tim Walz has received an endorsement from a former Minnesota governor — none other than Jesse Ventura.
In a video posted Thursday, Ventura said: “As an independent statesman, I don’t believe in the major political parties. Since leaving office, I’ve rarely endorsed a candidate for office in Minnesota of any political persuauion. But this election is too important.”
Ventura said Walz has been a strong leader, who “does what is right for Minnesota – not what is politically easy.” He also praised Walz’s stance on abortion rights.
Ventura criticized former President Trump and his supporters for their efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. As Ventura put it: “I can’t stand with anyone or any party who cannot condemn the Jan. 6 insurrection.”
Ventura served as governor from 1999 to 2003.
Earlier this week, Trump endorsed Walz’s Republican challenger, Scott Jensen. Trump said in a post that Minnesota won’t have “any more fiery takeovers of police precincts” if Jensen is elected.
It was a reference to a Minneapolis police station burned by protesters during riots that followed George Floyd’s killing under Walz’s watch.
Jensen gave the endorsement a cautious welcome in a quote that didn’t mention Trump by name.
