A farmer from Ashley (ND) who had been detained in Ukraine has returned to North Dakota.
A statement from the family of Kurt Groszhans says he returned to the state on Thursday, which coincidentally is his birthday.
Grozshans moved to Ukraine in 2017, where his ancestors are from, to start a farming operation.
He was jailed last November on charges that he plotted to assassinate Ukraine’s then-agriculture minister, Roman Leschenko, who later resigned. Groszhans’ family contended that the charges were false and aimed at silencing his claims of corruption in Ukraine.
Groszhans was released from custody earlier this year.
U-S Senators John Hoeven and Kevin Cramer confirmed that Groszhans is back in North Dakota.
