The Devils Lake Commission has approved a Letter of Intent designed to help spur development of a new hospital project in the city. The collaborative effort brings together Altru Health…Essentia…Spirit Lake Nation…and Devils Lake in an attempt to improve health care access and services.
Altru CEO Todd Forkel calls it a unique partnership. “We want to be a part of the solution looking forward to improve access and care.”
City officials say the LOI the first step in development of the health care campus.
Several employees of the current Devils Lake hospital questioned the city’s support of the collaborative effort.
Mayor Jim Moe says the decision is not meant to criticize current hospital employees. “It’s not a slight to CHI health care workers…and I’ve had people tell me its a band-aid station…and I hate hearing that.”
The target date for a new hospital is August 2027. The Letter of Intent was approved on a 4-to-one vote.
