By Pat Sweeney Oct 12, 2022 | 1:26 PM

Former North Dakota U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp has been named director of the University of Chicago’s Institute of Politics, effective Jan. 3rd.

Heitkamp succeeds David Axelrod, who in February announced his plans to resign.

The University says Heitkamp has been deeply involved with the Institute as a Pritzker Fellow and a member of the Institute’s senior advisory board.

She has mentored students and led critical discussions on a range of topics.

In 2012, Heitkamp became the first woman in North Dakota history to be elected to the U.S. Senate. She served until 2019.
