Legislation targets Chinese land purchases

By Doug Barrett Aug 18, 2022 | 8:18 AM

A U.S. Senator from South Dakota has introduced legislation that would ban China from buying American farmland and agricultural businesses.
Senator mike Rounds says the goal is to “blacklist” China…Russia… Iran…and North Korea.
The Republican lawmaker says he was alarmed when a Chinese company recently purchased farmland near the Grand Forks Air Force Base. According to Rounds the acquisition by Fufeng could threaten national security by allowing the Communist Party to closely monitor the operations and communications at a very important military facility.
Rounds adds the legislation makes certain American interests are being protected.
The bill does allow the President – after reporting to Congress – the requirement prohibiting a transaction on a case-by-case basis.
