UND holds Summer Commencement

By Pat Sweeney Aug 5, 2022 | 4:19 PM

More than 600 students were eligible to receive their degrees Friday afternoon at UND’s Summer Commencement ceremony at Chester Fritz Auditorium.

James Mochoruk, Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor of History, served as guest speaker. Mochoruk urged graduates to “happily accept the mantle of leadership,” adding that he has personally witnessed many of the graduates lead by example.

I’ve been inspired by the way that so many of you have persevered through these trying times, showing your friends, siblings, children, parents and other loved ones that hard work and determination can overcome almost anything,” Mochoruk said.

You may not realize it yet, but those of you who worked, studied, and still managed to find time for your friends and family while getting your degrees – you were acting as leaders. And those around you have already benefited.”

About 300 undergraduates were eligible to graduate today, along with 237 master’s students and 80 doctoral students.

University President Andy Armacost presided at the ceremony, which also included the induction of Julia Zhao as a Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor of Chemistry.
