A revised ordinance paving the way for electric scooters in Grand Forks received preliminary approval by the city council last night (Monday). Bird Rides Inc. is looking to roll a fleet of scooters into town on a pay for use basis.
City Attorney Dan Gaustad says some changes were made in the draft after it was reviewed by the council last week. “We lowered the age as to the use down to age 12 but those between 12 and 17 have to have a helmet on. They can be used on a street with a posted limit of less than 30 mph. Also you can use them on sidewalks…bike paths…and share use paths.”
Scooters would not be allowed on sidewalks in the downtown area.
Several council members have expressed concern in recent weeks over scooters being left scattered around. Gaustad says a provision in the ordinance is intended to address that issue by tying it to the permit process.
A public hearing and second reading of the ordinance is set for next Monday.
