It’s a really big deal. That’s how U.S. Senator John Hoeven describes the selection of the Grand Forks Air Force Base as the home of the Space Development Agency’s first Operations and Integration Center.
Ribbon cutting ceremonies were held today (Tuesday) at the GFAFB to mark the future operational site. The center will support the low earth satellite network for U.S. military communications.
Hoeven says the goal is to continue to push technology on the ground and in space in order to ensure our military stays ahead of adversaries like China and Russia. U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer says it’s part of the new space mission – but there’s more to come for the Grand Forks base.
It marks a nearly $325 million contract between the Space Development Agency (SDA) and a team led by General Dynamics Missions Systems, Iridium and Raytheon to develop the Space Networking Center at GFAFB, as well as a similar facility at Redstone Arsenal in Alabama. Both are expected to be completed by 2024.
