East Grand Forks hasn’t closed the door on allowing general use golf carts on city streets – but it’s not likely to happen anytime soon.
The discussion popped up at last night’s (Tuesday) council work session in response to several complaints from constituents reporting young people speeding on carts and ATV’s.
City Administrator David Murphy says current code limits the use of those vehicles. “The way our codes are written ATV’s and golf carts should not be on the road except for very specific criteria…and not to anyone who is unlicensed or under 16.”
Those stipulations also include for business purposes and between sunrise and sunset.
City Attorney Ron Galstad says allowing golf carts to tool around town is not a good idea.
UTV’s are allowed with proper permit. The city approved 54 requests in 2021 and over 30 so far in 2022. The permits are good for three years.
The council urged the police department to more vigilant in enforcement and will consider increased fines if needed. In addition staff will look to see how other cities address golf carts on city streets.
