GF council reviews Memorial Village Project

By Doug Barrett May 24, 2022 | 8:10 AM

The Grand Forks council is expected to approve a development agreement for the Memorial Village project in two weeks. The council received an update on the plans last night (Monday).

The five story building will sit on the site of the former Memorial Stadium. The first floor will consist of UND athletic offices. The upper four stories feature 99 residential units with underground parking.

It’s one phase of a UND master plan that also calls for the eventual demolition of the Hyslop Sports Center.  As KNOX News reported last week the move would pave the way for repurposing the site into a science and engineering corridor.

Some concern was raised over the potential loss of the pool. UND Associate Vice-President Mike Pieper says there are plans in the works to fill the void.  “There are roughly five pools in the proximity of Grand Forks and most of them are at the age where they are beginning to fail.  I think the conversation is how best can we serve the community with maybe one pool at one location.  Park and Rec did do an RFP and are actively doing some financial modeling on what a pool might mean to the community.”

The council has already approved a 90% property tax exemption over 20 years as a PILOT for Memorial Village. The estimated cost of the build is $40 million dollars.
