Grand Forks voters will get a chance to decide the fate of a new Valley Middle School project on September 27th. The school board last night (Monday) gave preliminary approval to the special election date for a potential $55 million dollar bond issue.
Superintendent Terry Brenner says there are several reasons for holding the election this fall. “The school year will be in full swing and the date isn’t tied to any school holidays. This would be considered a sweet spot because it falls between the June election and the November date. Retirees generally leaving would still be likely to be in Grand Forks at the end of September.” Brenner says turnout for last September’s 10 year building fund vote was also good.
Board member Doug Carpenter says he prefers a September date rather than placing the question on the November ballot so it doesn’t get lost in the discussion.
The estimated cost of a special election is around $9,000 dollars.
