Heavy rains have revealed a problem at the Grand Forks County Courthouse — the historic dome leaks.
Administrator Tom Ford has informed members of the county board that several holes have been discovered in the dome large enough for sunlight to pour through. He says during a recent rain event over 80 gallons of water had to be removed – and since water runs downhill parts of the third floor were also impacted.
The county is contacting roofing specialists to see about a potential fix. Ford says they will also investigate whether grant dollars might be available to help pay the bill due to the historic nature of the building.
The courthouse dates back to 1913. According to historical records the cast iron dome is seated on a round limestone tower. Atop is a statue of Justice.
