The Grand Forks School Board will be asked on Monday to declare an emergency to help facilitate repairs to Schroeder Middle School.
Heavy rains and snow are being blamed for damaging roof trusses over parts of the structure that date back to 1960. According to a staff report the bulk of the damage involves the Family Consumer Sciences lab…classroom…and conference room.
The district has consulted with a structural engineer and several contractors to assess the situation. The fix carries a significant price-tag. Early estimates range from replacing the courtyard drain tile at $100,000 dollars…..roof/truss replacement at $550,000 dollars…and courtyard in-fill at $2.8 million.
Superintendent Terry Brenner says the most pressing need is the roof/truss portion of the project. The funding would come out of bonding as part of the recent voter approved ten mill increase in the building fund. Brenner says the district would likely reprioritize other projects that were slated to receive those dollars – with the exception of air quality improvements.
The report describes the repairs as “complex” with “significant” fiscal impacts that if not addressed immediately could result in further building damage.
The business portion of the board meeting begins at 6:30 p.m.
