The National Weather Service is predicting a crest of 48.5 feet in Grand Forks – East Grand Forks this week. Flood stage is 28.
Due to anticipated flooding in northwestern Minnesota, Governor Tim Walz has declared a peacetime emergency and authorized the Minnesota National Guard to provide support for emergency flood operations, including personnel, equipment, and resources.
The Point Bridge on Minnesota Ave. was closed at 1 pm on Sunday, April 24th.
The Sorlie Bridge on Demers Ave. is still open at this time. Crews from Grand Forks and East Grand Forks expect the Sorlie Bridge to close some time on Monday.
The Kennedy Bridge is expected to remain open at these projected river levels. The Kennedy Bridge is not impacted until 52 ft
The closure into Riverside Park on N. 1st St. has been installed. 27th Ave. N. has been closed over the coulee. Shadyridge Rd. is currently closed with S. Shadyridge Rd. expected to be closed by early Monday. First responder crews will stage equipment in that neighborhood as they get cut off when both roads are closed.
The Grand Forks Wastewater Treatment plant is still running at high capacity. On Saturday, the plant pump 26 million gallons which is 3 times normal operation. The plant is expected to pump 18 million gallons on Sunday. Residents are still asked to limit water usage for the next couple of days.
In EGF flood walls are also being installed which will close off River Road at 17th Street NW, 12th Avenue NW, and in the downtown area by the Veteran’s memorial on 4th Street NW. The City is asking residents to cut back or restrict water usage with the sanitary system running close to or at capacity. Mayor Gander declared a state of emergency due to flooding. The Greenway system is closed because of the rising river levels.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation and the Minnesota State Patrol has enacted a road closure on Highway 317 from Highway 220 to the North Dakota border due to water over the road. Highway 220 is also closed from Highway 1 to Marshall County Road 5. The highways will remain closed until further notice and traffic should seek alternate routes.
Highways that remain closed:
- Highway 92 from Highway 59 in Brooks to Highway 32
- Highway 220 from Highway 1 to Marshall County Road 5
- Highway 317 from Highway 220 to North Dakota border
Highways that remain open, but currently have water over the road:
- Highway 2 Crookston (east of Jackson Ave)
- Highway 92 north of Zerkel
The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) and North Dakota Highway Patrol (NDHP) have closed ND 18 at mile point 184 near Inkster due to localized flooding. Motorists should avoid travel in the area and use alternate routes.
In Crookston sandbagging efforts are underway as the Red Lake River is expected to crest early this week at 28.5 feet – which would be a new record high.
