After talking about last week’s rejection of petitions seeking a vote on the proposed Fufeng project the council last night (Monday) opted to end the conversation – for now.
Council member Jeannie Mock asked her colleagues to suspend the agenda to include a discussion on the petitions – including a possible advisory ballot question.
Mock says there’s a lot of public interest in the corn milling plant. “I don’t think any promises have been made to people but I fear that people in general were expecting a question on the ballot for the Primary. If we go to a special election after we would be looking at timing that sometime after and additional cost.”
City Attorney Dan Gaustad cautioned the council about getting too deep into the conversation during a seven day review period granted petitioners. “Engaging in discussion in this interim period of time could sway things one way or the other – rightfully or wrongfully. It may be best to allow he seven day period of time to expire.”
The council needed a unanimous vote to suspend the agenda. Three council members voted against the motion.
City Administrator Todd Feland says the council will receive a Fufeng update next Monday night.
