ND marijuana legalization group aims for November election

By Doug Barrett Apr 11, 2022 | 1:05 PM

A group hoping to legalize recreational marijuana in North Dakota filed an initiative petition with the Secretary of State’s office today (Monday).  Supporters will need to gather 15,582 valid signatures by July 11th to qualify for the November election.

The proposal would allow adults over 21 to possess limited amounts of “pot” and purchase products from registered establishments in the state.

The campaign also plans to hire full-time and part-time petition circulators who will begin collecting signatures as soon as late next week.

In a prepared statement the group says the measure would put policies in place to regulate retails stores…cultivators…and other types of businesses.  In addition the products must be tested for contaminants and tracked through a seed-to-sale inventory system.

A similar effort failed in 2020 when the coronavirus pandemic hampered the group’s signature-gathering.
